Salami, a sausage that originated in Italy, quickly captured the hearts of meat lovers around the world. Classic salami is prepared from pork, sometimes from beef or veal. And different countries of the world are not shy to improvise when making this delicacy – they are also made from poultry or venison. Vaida Budrienė, communication manager of the shopping chain “This”, said that a variety of hams and sausages are included in the daily and special shopping baskets.

“The aim is for our customers to find the best products and ingredients inspired by different world cuisines, so we have prepared a variety. When the weather is cold, people look for more filling products that provide more energy. Analyzing the data, we see that a variety of gourmet hams and cheeses attract attention on weekends or holidays, while sausages and salami are everyday table products,” said V. Budrienė.

Originating from Italy, it is spread all over the world

Vilma Juodkazienė, representative of the shopping chain “This”, said that the word as long as comes from Italy and originally means “salted meat”. It is believed that salami has been produced for at least 2000 years. Historical sources say that this Italian dish was loved in ancient Roman times.

“Today, there are many different types of salami. Even in different regions of Italy, the specifics of salami production are different. For example, different spices are used, sometimes vinegar, different types of meat. Over time, this type of sausage spread to other European countries. Salami is also produced in Spain, France, and Hungary. And, for example, the favorite sausage is often used in pizza – pepperoni – is an American version of salami seasoned with paprika and other chilies. Salami is so popular in this country that September 7 is even celebrated as the national salami day in America,” said V. Juodkazienė.

It is said that the purpose of salami day is to encourage people to try different variations of this sausage. For example, instead of preparing a traditional dinner, prepare a snack bar dominated by different types of salami, or invite friends to a themed salami party.

Although loved and famous all over the world, salami is also appreciated in its native Italy. To honor this delicacy, several salami museums have been established in various regions of Italy. One of them is in Parma, the other in North-Eastern Italy. In both museums, you can get acquainted with the incredible history of salami, the ancient tools for its preparation, and the technique of making sausages.

How is salami sausage made?

Salami production consists of three processes. First, raw meat is ground and mixed with other ingredients such as white pepper, wine, vinegar, herbs, ground fat, garlic and sausage is formed. The fermentation process continues. First, the sausages are stored in a warm and humid place, then they are moved to a cool and humid room. Finally, dry sausage.

According to V. Juodkazienė, salami can be used not only in the production of pizza or sandwiches. And, for example, when preparing traditional Italian dishes carbonara pasta, using chopped salami instead of pork.

Fried salami can also be seasoned nachos Chips, even a variety of stews, salads: mix fried salami with chickpeas, chopped lettuce, celery, olives, tomatoes, onions and season with your favorite sauce. Also when preparing breakfast: frittata, traditional omelette, various sandwiches, even porridge.

The representative of “This” also shared some other recipes that will be used creatively.

Vegetable and lentil soup with salami

You will need:

500 g boiled chicken breast

A piece of chopped salami

1 ½ liters of water

100 g red lentils

1 stalk of celery

3 tomatoes

1 onion

2 cubes of vegetable broth

a pinch of salt, pepper

a drizzle of olive oil

We produce:

Cut the tomatoes, celery and onion into small pieces. Heat the olive oil in a pan, add the onion and fry for 3 minutes. Then add the remaining chopped vegetables, salami, add salt, mix everything and fry for another 5 minutes. Shred the cooked chicken with a fork and add it to the pot with the vegetables. Fill everything with water, add cubes of vegetable stock, add lentils and season with a pinch of pepper. Mix everything and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes. Simple but very tasty.

Pasta with salami and peas

You will need:

Favorite pasta

A piece of thinly sliced ​​salami

2 cups frozen green beans

A drizzle of olive oil

A piece of butter

A handful of chopped onions

2 teaspoons minced garlic

salt to taste

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

¾ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

A cup of grated parmesan cheese

We produce:

Salt the water in a pot and cook the pasta according to the instructions on the package. Before the end of cooking, stir the peas. Drain the water through a strainer and put the pasta and peas back into the pot. Heat the oil and butter in a pan over medium heat. Stir in the green onions and garlic. Season with salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Finally, stir in the salami and fry a little more. Add the resulting mixture to the pot with the cooked pasta and peas. Finally, season everything with cheese and mix again.

Beans and salami stew

You will need:

A piece of chopped salami

800 g peeled canned tomatoes

200 g of brown rice

200 g canned peanuts

200 g of champignons

1 onion

1 clove of garlic

4 years sh. sour cream

a drizzle of olive oil

1 year sh. dried thyme

1 year sh. ground hot pepper

a pinch of salt

a pinch of ground black pepper

We produce:

Heat the oil in a pan and fry the chopped onion and garlic and salami for a few minutes. Add the chopped champignons to the pan and stir for 3 minutes. Then add canned tomatoes, beans, spices and rice. Mix everything and heat until it boils, then reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour. Serve with sour cream. Delicious!
